Poor Law Research Project

This page contains details of the research into The Poor Laws of 1834. From the 1830's parishes were grouped into Poor Law Unions which dealt with claims from people who sought relief in times of need due to unemployment, illness, infirmity etc. The letters the Unions wrote to the Poor Law Commissioners in London give us lots of information. They are held in the National Archives and the British Association for Local History is co-ordinating research. If you would like to help, or have stories of your own you think we might be interested in, we would be delighted to hear from you.
